When ice reaches North Texas, three different groups decide how your trip goes. The FAA decides whether planes can land and take off. Your airline decides whether your flight operates and when. The roads between the airport and your door are a separate problem, and that is where a prearranged chauffeur earns its place. Below is how each piece works at DFW International and Dallas Love Field, and a checklist for the 48 hours before a storm.

The forecast airports and road crews plan around
During the January 2026 storm, both airports pointed travelers to their airlines for flight status. Airlines handle de-icing and schedules, while the FAA judges runway safety from friction tests and weather reports, as Community Impact reported. In practice, an airport can be open while your flight is cancelled, and a flight can be on time while the roads to it are not.
Before the storm: a 48-hour checklist
Most of the stress in a winter storm comes from decisions made late. A few minutes two days ahead removes most of it.
Check the NWS Fort Worth/Dallas forecast for timing. In North Texas, when ice arrives (overnight, morning rush) matters as much as how much.
Look for a travel waiver on your airline's site. Airlines often let you move a flight ahead of a storm without a change fee, but only for set dates.
Decide whether to fly earlier, later or not at all. Leaving a day early is often easier than leaving on the morning ice arrives.
Give your car service the airline and flight number, not just a time, so the pickup can follow the flight.
Add a second contact: an executive assistant, spouse or host who can receive updates if you are in the air or out of battery.
Pack for a long day: chargers, any medication, a snack and a warm layer you can carry.
If you are driving to Love Field yourself, check garage capacity on the airport's site. Love Field parking is first come, first served.
When your flight is delayed, cancelled or rebooked
A delay usually takes care of itself if your pickup is tied to your flight number. Cancellations and rebookings are where plans fall apart.
A rebooked flight may not show under your original flight number
When an airline moves you to a different flight, the original flight record may simply show "cancelled." Anyone tracking that flight, including your chauffeur, sees the cancellation, not your new flight. Send the new airline, flight number and date as soon as you have them.
Who to message, and when
As soon as the airline rebooks you: send the new flight to your car service and to your assistant or host.
If you are rebooked to the next day: ask whether you need a ride to an airport hotel tonight and a new pickup in the morning. These are two separate trips.
If your flight is still listed but there is a ground stop: keep the original pickup. Ground stops often clear, and the pickup follows the actual arrival.
If you are stuck at Love Field overnight: the airport keeps the secure area open and has offered cots, blankets and snacks when available, though restaurants and shops may be limited.
Getting to and from DFW and Love Field when roads are icy
The flight is often not the hard part. The drive is.
Bridges, overpasses and airport access roads
TxDOT warns that bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded stretches freeze first, as its winter driving guidance explains. North Texas highways are full of them, and so are the approaches to both airports. TxDOT also recommends driving below the posted limit, leaving about three times the usual following distance, and avoiding travel during winter weather when possible.
Allowing for drive times from Plano, Frisco and the Park Cities
Drive times on an icy morning are not predictable, so there is no rule that fits every trip. What helps is building margin on both ends:
For departures: Love Field's guidance during the January 2026 storm was to arrive at least two hours before departure. DFW advised extra time. Work backward from that and add margin for the roads you will use.
For arrivals: tie the pickup to your flight number, not a fixed time, so the chauffeur is not driving before the flight is actually on its way.
For long transfers north: trips from DFW to Frisco, Prosper or McKinney cover more highway and more overpasses than a short Love Field run to Uptown. Plan those with the most margin.
Check DriveTexas before you leave. It shows closures, road damage, traffic, weather impacts and live cameras, and TxDOT says its staff and contractors verify the information.
How MP Limousine handles winter weather
Our approach in a storm is the same as on any day, with more communication.
Flight monitoring: with your airline and flight number, we follow the flight so the pickup moves with a delay or an early arrival.
Rebookings: because a rebooked flight may not show in the original record, we ask you or your assistant to send the new flight as soon as you have it.
One plan, shared: executive assistants, hosts and family members can receive the same trip updates as the traveler.
The right vehicle: for luggage-heavy or family trips, our luxury SUVs, the Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon Denali, seat up to six with room for bags.
Safety first: bad weather, road closures and unsafe conditions can change the route, the timing or whether a trip can run, as our Safety & Policies page explains. If conditions change, we tell you directly.
[Editor note: add MP Limousine's answers here: when service pauses for ice, how rescheduling a cancelled flight works, waiting time during long delays, and airport hotel transfers.]
Stranded overnight: hotels and next-day departures
If your airline cancels the last flight of the day, you will usually need two rides: one to a nearby hotel tonight and one back to the airport tomorrow. Book both while you still have signal and battery. If the roads are bad that night, a hotel close to the airport keeps the next morning short. With hourly service, one chauffeur can handle the hotel, a stop for essentials and the return.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my car service if my DFW flight is cancelled? The pickup for that flight no longer applies. Send the new flight details to your car service as soon as the airline rebooks you, so the pickup can be moved to the new arrival.
Do airport car services operate during ice storms in Dallas? Most try to, but road conditions decide. Bad weather and road closures can change the route, the timing or whether a trip can run safely. A reputable service tells you directly when that happens.
Who decides whether flights stop at DFW or Love Field during winter weather? The FAA decides whether runways and airspace are safe and issues ground stops. Your airline decides whether your flight operates and handles de-icing. Live status is on the FAA's NAS status page.
How early should I leave for Love Field when the roads are icy? During the January 2026 storm, Love Field advised arriving at least two hours before departure. Add margin on top of that for the drive, especially if your route crosses several bridges or overpasses.
Where can I check road conditions in Dallas–Fort Worth? TxDOT's DriveTexas shows closures, weather impacts and live cameras. You can also call 800-452-9292.
Is a prearranged chauffeur better than rideshare in a winter storm? The main difference is planning. A prearranged chauffeur is booked before you fly, follows your flight number and keeps you and your assistant updated. Rideshare is requested after you land, when demand is highest and drivers may be fewest.
